Broad-billed Sandpiper

BROAD-BILLED SANDPIPER

Limicola falcinellus

A: Breebekstrandlooper

A rare visitor to South Africa. Almost certainly overlooked. On a mad twitch to get this species (and a couple of others), it took about an hour of sifting through the various Little Stints, Sanderlings and Curlew Sandpipers before we laid eyes on this stunning bird! In no time at all we had picked up a second individual and enjoyed them in the same scope view. Their short legs, boldly patterned upperparts and the decurved tip to the bill are diagnostic.
