Please see below a brief selection of some of the sightings highlighting life from my eyes!

African Pitta

The lowlands of central Mozambique hosts some of the most exciting birding in the southern African subregion, and foremost in the list of exciting birds is that of the near-mythical African Pitta. This is a highly-prized bird, that is very nomadic, moving into suitable areas only after adequate rains. This species is practically only seen for a brief period of under 1-month (throughout the whole year), when the birds loud display flight gives their position in these forests away. We have been exceptionally successful in finding this sought-after bird on our Zimbabwe/Mozambique tour, and have yet to miss this bird on this tour.

This is a video taken on my 2018 tour to Zimbabwe & Mozambique.

Pygmy Falcon

This delightful pair of the tiny Pygmy Falcon were strutting their stuff and displaying – a behavior shown to defend their territory, from other Pygmy Falcon competitors. These birds were seen in the dry Kalahari region of north-western South Africa.

Village Weaver

These male Village Weavers are hard at work displaying to the nearby females (out of frame), trying to impress them with their impeccable handiwork. These incredible birds construct these nests themselves, every year. They are a regular sighting in eastern South Africa.

Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoo

Panama is perhaps one of the best birding countries in the Neotropics. With easy access, an excellent logistic infrastructure, and a huge bird list of 997 species it is an obligatory birding destination! Here is a special and rarely seen Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoo that I had the privilege of spending some time with. Other species that were encountered on that specific day included; Snowcap, Collared Trogon, White-tipped Sicklebill, Blue-throated Toucanet, Golden-collared Manakin, Black and Yellow Tanager and many others!

Ridgway’s Hawk

The Critically Endangered (IUCN) Ridgway’s Hawk is one of the rarest raptors in the world, restricted to a small portion of the Dominican Republic – an island in the Caribbean. I enjoyed an incredible sighting of this rare bird when I made it over to the island in 2017.

Eastern Gorilla

Gorillas are probably the most well-known of the Great Apes, and trekking Gorillas are high on the wish list of many people worldwide. Uganda is arguably the best place to trek Gorillas – more specifically Eastern (Mountain) Gorillas, which occur in the spectacular Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This activity lives up to its hype, ten-fold, and spending some quality time with these gentle giants are one of life’s greatest experiences. With good friends, I was fortunate enough to get to see these gentle giants!

Aardvark

Aardvark are one of the most prized nocturnal mammals in southern Africa. They have a preference for the drier regions with the Kalahari Desert being a great area to try and find them. I have seen the interesting mammals on a few occasions, but this sighting outside Kimberley has been my best to date!
